This scholarship aims to provide financial support to self-funded international students who demonstrate outstanding performance in the Japanese Language Proficiency Test and who are pursuing studies in Japanese language and Japanese studies, whilst facing financial hardship.

Qualifier A person who meets all of the following requirements.
(1) Privately-funded international students who, in April 2025, are enrolled as regular students in a bachelor's program, master's program (including the first or second year of integrated master's and doctoral programs), doctoral program (including the third year or above of integrated master's and doctoral programs), or junior college in Japan, and who aim to pursue their studies in Japanese. Their status of residence in Japan during their stay must be ‘Student’.
(2) Those who took the Japanese Language Proficiency Test N1 or N2 within Japan in July 2024 (Session 1) or December 2024 (Session 2), achieved an excellent result, and passed.
(3) In addition to the requirements in (2) above, persons experiencing financial hardship.
(4) Individuals for whom the period of receipt, if adopted, would be equivalent to one academic year or more from April 2025.
(5) During the period of scholarship receipt, recipients shall not receive any other scholarships administered by us, and the total amount received from other organisations shall not exceed ¥600,000 per year (equivalent to ¥50,000 per month). [Loan-type scholarships (those requiring repayment) and tuition fee exemptions are excluded.]
(6) Persons who can obtain a recommendation from the head of the school in which they are enrolled in April 2025.
